Session 1: Opportunities in the Africa Continental Free Trade Area for More & Better Grain Trade
The Minister’s Roundtable kicks off the 8th AGTS with a high-level view of the place of intra-African grain trade in the era of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area. It will discuss the opportunities presented for grain trade by the AfCFTA, priority challenges that need to be overcome and the strategic investments required within the grain sector to take full advantage of the AfCFTA.
Session 2: A Changing Global Landscape: Opportunities and Challenges for the African Grain Sector
This session will share perspectives on these the changing socio-economic landscape within and outside Africa, the opportunities and challenges presented by such challenges, and give proposals of how grain sector agribusinesses and policymakers should make respective business and policy changes in preparation for these changes.
Breakout Session 1: Climate-Proofing Grain Trade & Investment
Climate change is causing increasingly erratic production, more food insecurity and greater pressure from invasive pests than ever before. Yet demand for food grains continues to growth unabated. Therefore, the grain sector agribusiness models need to adapt to climate change for greater sustainability. This discussion will provide an in-depth look into these matters and come up with appropriate recommendations.
Breakout Session 2: Harnessing the Potential of Women and Youth in Agribusiness for More Trade and Better Trade
Greater participation of women and youth in grain agribusinesses is crucial for the growth and sustainability of the African grain sector. This panel session will explore ways to get more youth and women involved in agribusiness start-ups through experience-sharing between women and youth grain “agri-preneurs” and well-established industry leaders.
Breakout Session 3: Trade Finance Innovations for Risk Mitigation in Grain Trade
This session will discuss new developments in trade finance to mitigate grain value chain risks. It will share lessons from around Africa and outside the continent with the intention of supporting greater access to appropriate financial services across grain value chains.
The 8th AGTS will look to find solutions for the missing pieces of the grain trade puzzle and attempt to come up with an action plan to deliver more and better grain trade on the continent.
