Agribusiness financial & risk management innovations enabling grain trade for smallholder farmers.

Joyce Kabura Njenga   is a Kenyan trained insurance expert with a Postgraduate degree in Actuarial sciences. Joyce has served as a financial services specialist in various financial services institutions in Africa for more than 15 years where she has seen innovation, development and implementation of financial services products within the insurance, credit and savings sectors in Africa. In micro insurance Joyce has seen innovations, development and implementation of commercially viable Pensions, Medical and life insurance products for the economically active poor clientele.

Currently, Joyce is the Regional insurance lead for Africa in VisionFund international (VFI). VisionFund international is the largest Christian Microfinance institutions (MFI) member network of 28 MFI’s in the world and is the microfinance arm of World Vision. World Vision is the Largest Christian Non-Governmental organization operating 90 countries in the world. In her current role Joyce is overseeing operations of the micro insurance programs for 11 countries in Africa where VFI has MFI operations offering Credit, savings and insurance programs worth 0ver 100Mil USD. These 11 countries are Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Senegal and Dr Congo

Since November 2014 she has been quite instrumental in the establishment of agriculture insurance schemes   for VisionFund clientele in Africa. Within that she has seen development of innovative approaches for offering Multiperil crop insurances (GMPCI) for smallholder farmers in Kenya, Malawi and Tanzania. VisionFund is currently seeking for ways to scale up this noble work targeting to include more smallholder farmers within Africa.

In this session Joyce shall share VisionFund’s journey in developing financial risk management tools for smallholder farmers in Africa and how these tools are enabling farmers’ access credit and savings services from VisionFund MFIs in Africa. Joyce shall also share the impact created with managing risk profiles of Smallholders and the theory of change for enabling Smallholders become bankable and its direct attribute towards increasing food security whilst enabling them to trade and increase their incomes.

AGTS 2019

The 8th AGTS will  look to find solutions for the missing pieces of the grain trade puzzle and attempt to come up with an action plan to deliver more and better grain trade on the continent.
